Universal credit

So both me and my partner work and universal credit helps with 85% of our childcare bill. Last month I got a work bonus so my paycheck was higher and they have given us nothing for childcare. Is there a way to get that back? To say that it’s my bonus ?

Hi there, it's highly unlikely you will get it back, UC works on a basis of earnings and deductions...any money coming in weather it be your salary or a bonus are considered earnings and as long as HMRC has knowledge of it so will Universal credit. For every extra £1 you earn UC will deduct 55p. You will probably see ur childcare element payment again from the next time your salary goes back it its base level. Hope that makes sense. I'm a certified employment advisor ..feel free to dm me as well. All the best xx

I doubt it. It’s still money that you have had during the assessment period regardless of it being a bonus or not. Next period when you don’t have the bonus I’m sure you will get the childcare element like normal

@Kudzi thank you! Yes it makes sense. I thought that was the case but I worked so hard for this bonus and I wanted to use it for something else, that’s all

I didn’t think you could get help with childcare if you both worked ?

@Lotti you can! It’s not advertised properly but if you both work universal credit will cover 85% of your childcare bill. It depends on how much you make as well. You can use a benefit calculator to figure out how much they would give you

Me and my partner are both full time so I’m assuming we won’t get help :(

@Lotti I used to do tax free childcare but I get a lot more this way

@Lotti it depends if you earn above the threshold. You should be able to use the 20% tax free government scheme if not.
