Postnatal Depression/Anxiety

Is anyone struggling with postnatal depression or anxiety? And has anyone taken antidepressants for it? I haven’t been to the GP ‘cause I don’t think I want antidepressants but have been feeling like this for months now :/

Yes I had difficulties with postnatal anxiety and am also not keen on medication. Have a look if you can get NHS talking therapy for yourself - maybe contact your midwifery team/hospital to see if they have something they can point you towards. Where I am (in Surrey) you can also self refer for therapy - I got an assessment within 10days and 6 therapy sessions which helped a lot.

I struggled massively with my first (now 29 months old) and eventually went and got help when he was 8 months it was a losing battle until that point. I got put on the lowest dose of sertraline and it was a ride for 2 weeks, it made me really unwell but now I can’t be without it! It got me through postpartum with my now 6 month old. I too wasn’t keen on medication but honestly it’s made my family life SO much better. Post partum nearly broke me and my marriage first time round. There’s no shame in it, sending love! And my inbox is always open x

No shame in meds or how you’re feeling. I always find the first step is saying it aloud. So good on you 🫂 I’m a mental health OT. Dr should be able to signpost you to talking therapies also if you don’t fancy meds.

No shame on meds or therapy. It's ok to not be OK. Ask to be referred to perinatal mental health team they should be able to help and are really supportive. Take care x

Sorry to hear you’re not feeling great. I left it too long before speaking to the GP and wish I had done it much sooner. A small dose of fluoxetine has helped me tremendously but I understand it might not be for everyone.

If your not breast feeding - you can take st.johns wort it’s a natural anti-depressant. It could be worth taking to see if it helps before you were to head to the doctors x

@Abbie i second this as I went through the exact same thing!!
