When I had my daughter who was two in March there was a main shared ward and then a few private rooms. I had a private room due to my health issues. So I'm not sure how you'd get or request a private room unless there's a specific reason for you to need the privacy. I was actually moved a few times. After leaving the room I was in before my daughter was born I was in a room with just one other patient/mum. The only reason we were then moved down to the ward area was because my daughter needed light therapy so we had to stay longer. It could come down to how busy it is when you have your baby or how long you'll actually need to stay after the birth.
It’s a shared ward. They have some side rooms but sadly I think it’s still normal visiting hours 😩xx
I had one of the private rooms on the ward but I was still recovering from surgery and my baby was in NICU
We had a tour of the midwife led unit during a face-to-face antenatal class (would recommend!) and they had private rooms for recovery available. I feel really bitter about it all though as you have to meet a certain criteria to be able to use those rooms post-birth - I know where I’d prefer to be after birthing a baby!
I had my baby on the OB ward in January but then was taken back down to the MLU afterwards and had a private room - no idea how I ended up in there I didn’t request it, I think maybe I was just lucky 🤷♀️ my husband could still only visit 9-9 and then normal visiting hours for everyone else x
I managed to have a private room after. No other reason other than it was available. We were put in there about 7am from the delivery suite and they let my husband stay and nap in the double bed with me. I was there for about 36 hours and they let me husband come and go as he wanted/ needed but not overnight x
Big ward. But depending on how long your are there they will give you a private room. I was on the the wards for 4 days and a private for 3
When I was at the MLU at the Heath I was in a private room with ensuite first time, and a room with two beds and an ensuite second time. Just stayed over night. In the summer none of the bedroom or bathroom doors shut properly (the doors absorbed water when the floor was mopped or something). So bring ear plugs/eye mask if your a light sleeper
When I had my little boy in May on the MLU, we were given a private room and my birthing partner stayed with me until we were discharged the next day but I think that’s because my baby was born late in the evening and we didn’t want to have to go back the next day for the newborn checks x
Hey @Lucy can I learn the name of the antenatal class you took? Sounds like a nice one!
Thanks so much everyone!
@Rachel your photos are very insightful, thanks for sharing! Can I ask what the purple light thing in the first photo?
Thanks @Lucy ❤️
@Nice hiya, Im not 100% sure but think it’s mood lighting, I didn’t get to use any of the pain relief aids or claiming things in there as I went straight into the pool and pushing when I arrived but there are a lot of things in their to help with the contractions and to try to make the environment as calming as possible
Post natal ward is a shared ward with 4/6 beds and only hospital visiting hours unfortunately.
