Who is higher priority to have their baby's first?

At my pre op yesterday I was told there's 2 of us booked in for surgery but they don't know who will go first because they're not sure who is higher priority, so just wondering who you think is higher priority 🤔

Am I right in thinking you are the 1 baby person? Either way, I’d be more concerned that they are sharing details relating to another woman and her pregnancy

Erm, as if they even told you what other patients are on the theatre list 🙃 that’s insane and surely against patient confidentiality. It’ll just be one in at 8/9am and one at 9/10am. You can both even get bumped up the schedule tbh if an emergency mum who’s been labouring all night is in difficulty. It’s all very fluid on the day so don’t stress about it. You’ll be monitored and looked after throughout but I’d be pretty pissed that they are freely talking about you both.

Why would they have told you that lol, away from confidentiality that surely would cause issue for themselves no? In case you’re arsey about it?

I need the others POV 😅

@Kerry 🇬🇧💕 Yeahh I am, I'm really not bothered either way though. I don't mind being first or second, we'll both have the surgery on that day regardless, I'm just intrigued to know what other people see is a priority

First of all even if you’re second, they go really quickly! For me we found out the morning of - one lady had GD and was like 41W. I have blood cancer, tiny first baby (this was my 2nd), and was 38 + 3. We both got there at 6:30am. They chose me to go first and mine was out at 10:03am. She went in literally right after! Don’t stress too much about it ❤️

@Kerry 🇬🇧💕 @Sarah @Kayleigh As long as patient PII is not exposed (name, date of birth, etc.) it’s perfectly fine for them to tell the expectant mothers this stuff! Helps mentally prepare. I was really glad they told me there would be 2 on the day, that they were weighing my stuff vs XYZ, and that it was basically 50/50 and they would decide the morning of

The anesthetist was a little bit like a rabbit in the headlights yesterday, he was bouncing between the two of us oversharing a little bit too much 😂 and he did the handover to the midwife for both of us in the hallway for all to hear as well. I only asked him what time he wanted me to fast from and that's when he said he didn't know which of us would go first because she was only twins with no medical issues. I jokingly said to him we can flip a coin on the day 😆 I'm not stressed, this is my 3rd section. Just intrigued to know from anyone's experience which of us might be considered higher priority

I guess it might come down to whoever is ready first so I'm gonna aim to get there early 🤣🤣

@Incog I did get there like 20 min before her & gowned up quick hoping it would help, maybe it played a factor 😆

@Allie I honestly don't mind if I'm second, I'm just rubbish at being nervous, I'd rather get it over and done with really quickly. I reckon on the day I'll be that nervous my BP will be stupidly high and they'll do me first 😅

I've got really bad veins as well so it might be the case that they get a canula in her before they can get one in me 🤷‍♀️

Get there early , but obviously the high BP is priority as it could be the start of preeclampsia, could lead to still born . The twins are fine .

I’d try to stop worrying about it and focus on the fact that baby will be with you soon. Rest up so you’re ready.

Twins are considered high risk even if the mother or babies don't have identified health issues. The Drs will make the right choice on the day with whatever they have available.

As a Twin Mum who had her babies at 37 weeks, I'd consider how you would feel having your singleton at 37 weeks. That's 3 weeks before you due date and although is full term it is still a higher chance of needing medical intervention or monitoring for the babies, so the extra hours they have of being monitored in hospital can be vital. Eta now I've read the comments. But twins are always going to be the higher priority. If it's like it was for me you'll all rock up the same time, the twin mum will go first and then whomever from the next planned is highest. Just because there is no 'medical condition' like high bpit doesn't mean the twin pregnancy is not higher risk. I had breech babies, and OC, and without them just having twins is higher risk from what I understand due to the higher risk of pre term labour. They won't check all your blood pressures and then pick, they'll have the order set before they start anyone.

@Cheryl bit of a presumption there tbf.

They don't really like to deliver twins early unless medically necessary so I'd say you are higher priority in this case. However they probably can't decide because twins pregnancies are generally high risk anyways

@Allie I understand being told that there are 2 other mums on the day etc but that’s where it should stop in my opinion, the OP doesn’t need to be told the details of the other woman, it’s irrelevant, plus on the day emergency c sections may happen on the day and they will take priority. When I got to the hospital for my 2nd c section I was told I was 2nd on the list, great, had time to chill etc but then suddenly I ended up being 1st because there was a paperwork issue with the first mother and suddenly I was off and didn’t feel “ready” so not sure the additional information does help mentally prepare. I’d rather just turn up at 7am and you’ll go in when you go in - simples.

@Kerry 🇬🇧💕 I feel like the po1ll results show exactly why patients info shouldn't be shared 🙊

It'll be the high BP first but you'll probably go in as the other lady comes out as most have 2 theatres.

I know the woman who had hers before me it was her 3rd section, only knew this cause her husband was really loud on the ward x

I had preeclampsia and I was last - I would say twins take precedence. Unless your baby is really struggling or your health is deteriorating rapidly, high blood pressure alone is not a high emergency. My BP was 200/130 just before I had my spinal.

I think the other factor is neonatal beds - they need to make sure there is two empty beds for the twins just in case

With my son it was first to call in got to go first. I called at 530 to check in and was told to be there by 6

From my perspective as a midwife, if both are elective procedures, I’d say the twins will be first, as that might take longer due to complications that may arise extracting the babies out (breech, transverse, forceps). If the woman with the BP is an elective and her BP is currently controlled with anti hypertensives, then she’d be 2nd. However, if her BP isn’t controlled and they’re suspecting pre-eclampsia, she is likely a cat 3 emergency section and will be 1st.
