Separation anxiety and behaviours

Hey, I’m on my own with no family and My partner has just left to go into basic training with the army. It’s the first time him being away and Since him going, my little one (2.5 years) has constantly been whinging (not always crying), clinging onto me so bad and the tantrums have definitely escalated. We had a half a hour tantrum today, I just couldn’t snap her out of it no matter what - I tried distraction, favourite snacks, dimming the lights and putting on sensory videos and opening the door to go outside. Nothing worked. Bedtimes have also got worse, banging on doors, throwing herself and things around and screaming. Any tips?

It must be a big change for her not having her dad around. I actually do not think that trying to stop tantrums works. I try to acknowledge her feelings and tell her that I am there if she needs me. I stay close but don't force any contact and she normally comes to me after 5 or 20 mins foe a cuddle

sending you lots of love, my partner is in the army too and has just come back from a 3 month deployment. Our little boy struggled a lot, it affected his sleep and behaviour. There’s a few things we do to help him understand daddy will be coming back, we have a few stories aimed at military children (my daddy’s going away & Mackey monster) I also have a sweetie jar filled up where he has one a day whilst daddys away. We also have a ‘huggable hero’ of daddy which helps him massively, he sleeps with it every night. We’ve also before had recordings of him reading a story so he can hear his voice. It’s a huge change for them and I can’t even imagine how they feel, I struggle with it still let alone a 2.5 year olds mind that doesn’t understand what’s going on. It’ll get somewhat easier, but there will also be hard days, keep talking about daddy, phone calls as much as he can (I know it can be hard in basic). Keep pushing through the hard days, you’ve got this 🫶🏼

@Poppy thank you :) I’ll have a look at the books for sure, we are also going through the no phase so when he’s on the phone I’m like talk to daddy and she just replies with no 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ so helpful!! Haha
