Depends on where you live. I live in California and get paid to care for my autistic son. He is unaware of dangers, elopes and puts non edible things in his mouth. He has to be watched 24/7. We’re really blessed to have this program because I hear not all states do

@Reyna but how do you apply

@Elizabeth it’s called IHSS. You have to call the hotline depending on your county. Google your counties IHSS number (CA only not sure for other states)

@Reyna I’m a preschool special education teacher and never know how to direct parents

Following. I take care of my autistic son and disabled mother. It's financially very difficult

@Elizabeth if the child is part of the regional center their coordinator can help them out also. They can even help with advocates if they get denied.

@Reyna yes I know that but regional is so backed up. Statistics are now 1 is 42 kids have autism in California . It’s hard to get aba for many families

If the person has long term care insurance or if Medicaid has a caregiving benefit you can be identified as the caregiver or home health aide if the benefit is managed by an agency. Depends on benefits and state of residence. It doesn't pay super well but it is supplemental income and is so much better than working a lot in an unpaid capacity.

Also hi I'm a social worker in Michigan, Texas and Missouri. I worked for a caregiving agency that is now called "the key." Reach out if you have questions. Wishing y'all well in your superhero work of being caregivers and advocates 🤍

@Elizabeth yes, my 4 year old has been on ABA wait list since he was 3. We applied to multiple agencies
