Nursery

Started looking at nurseries for my LB for when he’s 1 next year. Thought of it is breaking my heart already. But I have been told to get organised as nursery spaces fill up quick. I am also struggling to decide on which nursery to select. Do you pick one based on how close it is to your home or how close it is to your work? Currently my work is on a hybrid basis - 2 days in office and 3 days at home. Do you have a nursery space yet and what was the main criteria for you when selecting a nursery for your LO? Wish I could keep looking after him full time until he’s at least 2. 1 feels so young.

I left it too late with my first (started looking at 4 months but I guess demand is high in my area as there were barely any with space!!) so we ended up with a nursery that was nowhere near my home or work 😂 But actually it’s been such a wonderful nursery that we kept him there, and have got our July baby on the list for there too. It’s about a 45 minute round trip from our home - I mostly work from home so not too bad. I felt so guilty when I first went back to work but honesty he absolutely LOVES nursery and he has such a great time there/learns so much there. The first couple weeks though are really hard cos they do find it hard and don’t want to go to start with, so it’s kinda heartbreaking and you do question if it’s the right thing! But I can confirm that it just takes a few weeks and then they’re really excited to go and loving it. Sometimes I ask my little boy what he wants to do on a Friday (he goes nursery Wednesday and Thursday) and he says “go to nursery” 😂

Oh - in answer to your question though, close to home or work makes sense. I think if working hybrid with some days at home I’d probably opt for closer to home, though. BUT I would prioritise the feel of the nursery over both, and how I think they will look after my child. I did choose the one I chose over one much closer to home because I didn’t think much of the one closer to home.

We need to start looking too and I’m finding it hard as we didn’t actually know what we need yet and have some circumstances that could change nearer the time 🫣 so feeling a bit confused as to what to do. Our plan is for my boy to be in nursery when I’m in the office so I’d prefer to pick a nursery near work which also happens to be near my husbands work too, which is helpful. When I’m working from home, mother in law comes over to care for him 2 days a week and husband is reducing to - 4 day week so can have him 1 day. It’s all well and good until you need to change your office days cz admittedly I don’t work a pattern I go into office when suits me/the business/the customer guess I’m gonna have to be more regimented when going back.
