Check to see if waters have broken

Does anyone know the test that is done to see if waters is broken how accurate it is or what they actually do? Is it just someone having a look inside or do they send a swab sample off to the lab? Is the swab sample to check for infection or to check for waters rupturing? Thanks ☺️

They take a swab of your cervix and then they place it into some liquid for 5 minutes and after that you will get either a positive or negative result!! They also usually check for other infections also at the same time just to be safe! Either way it’s very quick and you know straight away if it’s your waters or not!

Sorry just to add - the swab to check for infections has to be sent off so you usually don’t get the results for a couple of days!

My waters broke at 15 weeks and they did 3 different swabs on 3 different days, the ones you get the results in 5 minutes as mentioned by @Rhea but all came negetive. The reason was they said that the amniotic fluid had to be ideally be leaking within a certain time before doing the test. Even though it was confirmed by the scans, that my waters had broken the test was possitive on the 4th try as i was leaking couple hours before they did the test. They also do send a swab off to check for infection x

Thank you both xx

Do any of you know what the test is called? X

It depends on your hospital. Many now use the amnisure tests that detect amniotic fluid. Some still rely on checking pads and speculum examinations

@Ceri-Ann thank you! Are they quite accurate? I’m worried about false positives! I think it could just be sweat as i only leaked in the night and I guess when discharge and sweat combine it looks worse than it is. Would waters stop leaking? I’ve only ever had a gush with my other 2 pregnancies so it’s all new to me x

They are pretty accurate. Contrary to what so many women on this app like to say waters can stop leaking if baby is plugging a gap. When you change position or baby moves it can unplug the gap and cause the leaking to start again
