How can I support my mom?

My mom was diagnosed with a TBI/concussion from a car wreck Ever since the car wreck she’s been super depressed which we now know is caused from the TBI The doctor is saying she needs to get on depression medication now and possibly for life I’m so scared she’s gonna end up suicidal from this as she has told me basically the only reason she is alive is for us and my niece and nephew that she doesn’t feel right anymore. How can I support her? I don’t wanna lose my mom to this

I am so sorry you have to face that Push the doctor to find you another solution unless she physically need a medication for her nervous system for the accident you can refuse and try other ways for her depression speciality if she didnt start i can tell you what we do for these situations specially when they refuse their depression medication or face horrible side effects from these meds How old is she?

@April she is 48! She is getting into therapy but any advice would be great as she’s never been on depression medication before thanks :)

I'm so sorry your family is going through this. I find marijuana to be very helpful for my depression, and I like that unlike prescription meds it's not something that I need to take all the time to be effective, I can just use it from time to time when needed

@Katherine my mom wouldn’t ever smoke weed even if it was medication so I don’t think that’s an option but thank you!

What does TBI stand for? Have you gotten second and 3rd opinions on her condition and prognosis? Have you done any research on herbal medications? Sometimes herbal things can help, when pharmacy meds can't! Could she be deficient in a vitamin/nutrient, or is it more like a brain injury?

@Bethany traumatic brain injury She had a car accident She went to the ER where they claimed she was just having headaches so she did get a second opinion where they did scans and confirmed it was a concussion/traumatic brain injury I don’t think herbal medication would help that

Our power went out and I reviewed your post. These are videos and I think 2 different people, with your problem! Dr John Deloney show is a mental health guy on YouTube. He specializes in trauma and managing mental health issues. Might be helpful and he's covered a lot of issues.

I suffered a TBI in June and honestly it’s been such a hard recovery physically and mentally. I saw a TBI specialist psychiatrist that helped. I found the whole experience very isolating so anything you can do to make her feel less alone, little treats such as a friend bringing me a favourite coffee really helped too. Sometimes medication is the answer but for me I didn’t start to feel better until I started to get a bit of normality back in my life, no amount of medication would have helped me with that as the root cause was still there. Headway is a good charity with useful resources you could have a look at. It’s so difficult and really hard to see any end in sight when you’re in it, but it does get better with time

We have places like Headway in the UK for people who have suffered a head injury - do you have similar in the US? www.headway.org.uk/about-brain-injury/individuals/types-of-brain-injury/traumatic-brain-injury/

@Regan can you educate me on the life long effects? My mom just got put on disability at work through her insurance so if she has to miss a day it doesn’t affect her social security or something? I’m just praying this resolves my mom has been through to much to be going through this. It breaks my heart.

@Neena I’m gonna research it now!

@Neena sadly we do not have that organization but we seem to have some like it
