I would probably ask the consultant what you'll be getting?
I begged for pain killers after pulling my cut when I was being discharged. Otherwise I would have left with just the injections for clots
I was discharged with 10 days worth of dihydrocodeine, 400mg ibuprofen, a bottle of lactoluse, spare compression stocking and replacement dressing if I needed it. Just ask them what your pain management plan is and what you’ll be discharged with.
I was given diclofenac!
@Danielle that's the good stuff haha! Any reason why you were given diclo specifically? It is not the type of painkillers they happily give out unless it's absolutely necessary
@Dominique maybe because I had a section?
@Danielle no, I mean most women seem to be sent off with some paracetamol and ibuprofen post section
I think it depends on your pain after, I wqa discharged with blood thi. I got injections and also lactulos and just alternative paracetamol and ibrobrufen, but I think they evaluate you and depending on how much pain your in before discharge
I was sent home after 24 hrs with oramorph - didn’t take it and just had paracetamol :) Didn’t expect them to provide standard pain killers as they are so cheap to buy! I wouldn’t haven’t accepted them for free anyways!
I just got sent home with the anti clotting injections I think, the nurses gave me a strong painkiller Literally just before we were leaving and said should be fine with standard painkillers after that and I was, by day 3 I only had minimal pain, day 2 was the worst after the operation painkillers had worn off
@Chloe ah yes I forgot about those injections 😂😂
@Danielle I hated them my husband did them for me otherwise I probably wouldn’t have done it 🤣🤣 they didn’t even hurt really but I can’t inject myself!!
I had my baby via csection at Whiston 2 weeks ago and they sent me home with ibuprofen and dihydrocodeine x
I was sent back with codeine but didn’t take it due to breastfeeding and I didn’t actually need it anyway. I didn’t need the clotting injections either so didn’t come home with those x

@Emily how did you find it Emily? And how is your recovery going. I’m really anxious 🥲
@Chloe my sister is a paramedic so she came over each night and did them for me!
@Incognito the first week was hard I won't lie, just keep yourself topped up on the meds, but other than that I was carrying on relatively normal after a couple of days, it honestly wasn't that bad x
Feel free to message me any questions you have
They weren’t going to send me home with any but I just asked the midwife for codeine to take home so she got the doctor to authorise it. I only had it as a last resort though and had it on 3 occasions
I was sent with dihydrocodeine for 10 days but needed to buy paracetamol and ibuprofen to top up in between so stock up in advance! This was sufficient to keep pain at bay. I wouldn't have wanted to take anything more.
I’m not sure what Whiston give after a vaginal birth, but I’ve got an elective section booked in 2 weeks & have already been given the prescription for blood thinning injections, dihydrocodeine & ibuprofen which impressed me
In NZ I was discharged with paracetamol and ibuprofen to take 3 hourly (lots of weeks worth if I felt I needed it) plus even tramadol tablets if I felt like they were needed. I had a very comfortable recovery with all that pain relief, I was going to walks in the park with my baby when he was 6 days old. I’ve heard shocking stories on here of people getting no pain relief. It’s surgery all the way to your organs how tf can they not provide ongoing pain relief smh
I had diclophinic for 3 weeks- I was sent home with I think 4-7 days worth after being in hospital on oromorph for 1 week. My pain was really bad - so I rang the ward (it took many calls etc) but they eventually agreed to give me a further 7 days of it so total was about 3 weeks. I ended up not using a weeks worth though as I was going to save them for when/if I had really bad days as was terrified I would run out of pain relief but didn’t actually use them x discuss pain management with them and express how much you think you need it if you feel you do - and continue to call the ward should you need to. Your GP will not prescribe diclophinic. X
My baby was in NICU for a month so I had access to proper painkillers while recovering but my sister had to fight to get something to take home, they gave her 6 codeine….six!! Absolutely ridiculous if a man had just had abdominal surgery you know they’d be sent home with some type of morphine!
I didn’t get sent home with pain meds I’m from Nottingham I just bought ibuprofen and paracetamol and took it regularly x
@Eve my husband has a 3cm hernia removed last year and was sent home with morphine and heavy meds for at least a week. I was given instructions for his recovery and he was told to rest in bed… When I was discharged after my section I had to stand my ground to be given medication and told to be active to aid recovery. He actually moaned at me about it hurting saying “you have no idea” 😂 his face when he realised what he’d said was priceless. Dude, please. 3cm hernia through keyhole and like 4 stitches inside his belly button vs 3 inches through 7 layers of skin and muscle. The weaker sex, my arse xx
I was discharged with ibuprofen, paracetamol and dihydrocodeine pain killers wise. Also given the blood thinning injections x
@Sarah yep sounds about right!! No way hahaha men are so dramatic fgs honestly!🙄🤣 xx
I was sent home with 14 codeine tablets and expected to buy my own paracetamol and ibuprofen. I was also provided with lactulose for the constipation caused by codeine but I just avoided taking the codeine when possible and I was fine
