@Kacee we tried the small room thing and they just pre and poop and then lay in it 😞
How old are they?
@Kacee 1 yr and the other one my husband got from the pound when his daughter was like … 1 and now she’s 8 so… she’s older
Ok, and breed? Or are they mixed? Because some breeds take longer to get out of the "puppy stage". Rotties and pits for example typically have a 3 year "puppy phase" whereas working breeds (like collies and heelers) have more like a 12-18m puppy stage. And then many small breeds are permanent puppies and are likely to struggle with things like chewing, peeing, and shaking/crying when nervous for the entire extent of their life.
@Kacee I think the younger one is Shepard/Retriever. The older one is from the pound so we don’t know
@Kacee but the younger one is BIG. He’s going to be a real big dog lol He’s very protective so we’d like to keep him and train him but idk where to start.
Ok. Retrievers are ones that take about a year and a half of puppy phase. Retrievers are also typically very positive response oriented. So maybe, try little treats and lot and lots of praise when you see him go outside.
You may also wanna look up the dog training secret on Facebook. They have good tips on their page.
@Kacee first off… thank you for taking the time for the responses.. secondly… we do 😭 We have a whole thing of treats for him and use them often. The other night we let him outside at like…. 1-2 am before we went to bed and we woke up around 8am and he had shit and pissed all over my kitchen. 😭
I'm in the middle of the same struggle with my 1 year old pit puppy. It takes a lot of patience and love to be a dog mom too! But it's ALWAYS worth it! So don't give up! I'd still try the smaller space to discourage the messes (plus, smaller space to clean) and you can also try citrus spray over the cleaner of choice because dogs typically HATE citrus spray. My puppy was really bad until about 3 months ago and he still has accidents.
I have dogs too and what I've found that works better than anything else at removing the smell is not a pet specific cleaner. It's Clorox urine remover. I typically get mine at my local "bulk" store (like Costco, club, or chefstore). It also works FANTASTICALLY for Littles when they have accidents (you can add it to bedding/clothes in the washer too). As for the training part, if they struggle with night time and they are more than a year old, I strongly recommend night isolation (either a small room like a half bath/closet space/washroom or a kennel). This encourages them to hold it longer because they can't get the mess away from them. Hope this helps!!!
