Group B Strep

I’m almost 39 weeks pregnant. I went into antenatal assessment unit 2 days ago as I was experiencing some discharge (I wasn’t sure if this was my waters breaking or results of being intimate with my partner the night before). A swap was taken during a cervical examination and they determine my waters had not broke and it was most likely just discharge. The hospital called me today to say they found Group B strep present as well as thrush. I’m really concerned about the Group B strep as they’ve said as soon as I go into labour or as soon as my waters break I need to get into hospital asap so they can administer IV antibiotics (normally penicillin). In order to stop the bacteria getting to the baby as it can make the baby unwell. Has any one else experienced this? Is there any advice you can give as I’m really anxious now. I’ve never had penicillin but my brother is allergic to penicillin, what if I am too.

It’s a common thing and nothing to really worry about They will give you the medicine when you go onto the hospital and they will be able to deal with any reaction you can have even though you might not have one

@Ashley Thanks Ashley, hopefully all goes well. I think I’m just getting pre-birth anxiety

I had GBS and gave birth 2 weeks ago. I went into hospital at 6am and gave birth and 21:41 and was given 2 x rounds of antibiotics in that time. We had to stay in for 24 hour obs after it that’s all :) x

I had GBS at around 30 weeks, I was swabbed again around 40 weeks (my choice) and turns out I didn’t have it at that time and so didn’t have the antibiotics and baby was fine! Xx
