Elective bottle feeding

I understand sometimes breastfeeding doesn't work out, but throughout my pregnancy midwives and health visitor would ask "are you planning to breastfeed or bottle feed?" Which led me to wonder, why on earth would someone *choose* to bottle feed without first giving breastfeeding a try?

Because they want to. That's it, that's the only reason they need.

A lot of people choose not to breastfeed because breastfeeding is really hard, physically and mentally.

I wonder this because I absolutely loathe washing bottles with a passion 😂

Interestingly, a couple of mums I know started breastfeeding and their babies took to it so well, that they refused any other form of feed. No expressed milk in a bottle, no formula. This put all the pressure on mum to feed, day and night. They both regret breastfeeding! They both wish they'd either exclusively expressed to bottle feed or went straight to formula. So I guess, when / if they have more babies, they'll probably go straight to bottle. Because that'll be their choice.

Interesting that people say it's easier to bottle feed. I EBF and to me it's so much easier than bottle feeding. Other mum friends that bottle feed have to plan everything so much, then there's all the washing etc. whereas I just whip my boob out and we're done 😄

@Charley people actually want to give their babies inferior nutrition that costs a fortune?

@Rima shouldn't they at least try? Breast milk is proven to be better for baby. I had formula in the cupboard in case baby didn't take to the boob or in case I struggled too much. I did struggle but knew breast milk was better for my baby so pushed through

@Tessa this! We have bottles of expressed milk for daddy to feed baby and they are such a pain to clean, keep sterile etc

@Tanya I know some babies can get very attached to the nipple, but I don't think that's a reason to completely avoid breastfeeding for a first timer as it isn't necessarily going to happen. My baby takes both boob and expressed bottles without issue.

@Hazel I agree. My baby takes expressed milk in a bottle as well as straight from the boob. The bottle is so much messier, he's more likely to dribble, always needs burping after, the bottles need washing and sterilising. Straight from the boob is so much easier, even at night. No waiting for bottles to warm up while the baby screams in your arms

Fab job bashing other mums. Love when people want to put other mums down for a decision that doesn't impact them in the slightest 🖕🏼 Some people can't, some people don't want to. I very briefly tried with my girl, and then moved to formula. If we're lucky enough to have a second we will be using formula straight away. Also as far as inferior nutrition goes... I don't have to supplement her with anything like vit d which you do with breastfeeding and out of the group of babies we know she coped the best when they were all ill.

@OP, you don't have to agree with it or understand. But people can feed their babies however they choose. You know this is a controversial thing to say which is why you've gone incognito. It doesn't matter to you or your baby, concentrate on your own, Sincerely, an exclusively breastfeeding mum who doesn't bash formula feeding mums 👍🏻
