Has anyone had an iron infusion?

Hey I'm wondering if anyone has had an iron infusion? My ferritin is now at 5. I've been told throughout I can't have one for low iron because I'm asthmatic, but because I had a PPH last time, it seems the benefits outweigh the risks. However, the side effects seem awful, and I'm finding it hard to get answers from midwife/consultant. Has anyone had an iron infusion in pregnancy? Or had one whilst asthmatic?

Hi, I’ve had two but I’m not asthmatic. I feel much better for it now! I’m back just taking iron tablets again. I found it pain free, I just chilled while it was happening. Was in and out in an hour and half xx

@Jess thank you!

Sorry I can’t answer your question, but did your ferritin start higher and drop? Mine was 7 at 28 weeks and is now 14 but reading on google, under 30 warrants a transfusion. I only had my blood test Friday morning, the results popped up online Friday evening but the midwives don’t get them for a few days from what I understand so I’m none the wiser currently on what happens, if anything now

@Sophie I've had low ferritin since my last labour, and have been on iron tablets and regularly tested for my iron since my 8 week booking bloods because it was on the lower end, the PPH is likely to happen again due to the circumstances and I have had HG so levels are low in general. I can't be exact, but it started off early 20s, then 12, then 7, and then 5 last week. I've been told no a couple of times, and it seems they only give the infusion when they are really low due to the many side effects. I've had to push for an infusion, and after speaking to maternal meds today, they have agreed it's necessary. They may just tell you to keep taking the tablets, but it's worth asking!

Maybe others had a normal experience personally didn’t have the best experience with treating anemia. Iron tablets weren’t helping, had infusion as I had virtually no ferritin then day after infusion all the sudden got numb hands and feet, couldn’t see, overheated was hyperventilating for a while and had to lay down in the street and a stranger call the ambulance. Hospital just monitored baby and blood pressure did no blood test presumed my iron was still low and I needed to wait. 2 weeks after iron infusion my next blood test showed ferritin was at 400 which is too high but I was never told at the time or given explanation. Now it’s too low again. A month after the infusion I did feel better tbh ! but I think it could have potential side effects the first few days that wouldn’t be great if you have asthma I would just definitely proceed with more caution and information about it than I did ! X

Thanks for the insight. I hope you get everything sorted 🫶🏼 it's rough not feeling 100% 🫶🏼 I'm grappling with the side effects verves having to have a blood transfusion after baby is here anyway. Hard to know what to do!

Not saying everyone with low iron requires ones. Just that I did last time due to the amount I haemorrhaged, but declined it. I was okay in the end but recovery was hard and loooooong.

Not asthmatic but I had my iron infusion yesterday at 38 + 3 days. they have also booked me in for one next week ( a week later ) just incase baby hasn’t came yet. But I don’t feel any better but I guess it’s just the time of this pregnancy currently so far along. But I know for birth it puts your mind at ease a little knowing you won’t loose so much blood. I’d say get it done. Best of luck ❤️

@Gemma they rang this morning saying carry on with the tablets! So that’s sorted that. Hope you feel brighter after yours!
