When to start looking at nurseries?

I'll be heading back to work in November when my son is 11 months and have no idea when to start looking at nurseries but know I can't leave it too late or there won't be any places. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😊

I panicked because a friend who had her baby a few months ago went to apply for a nursery for September and it was full, I’ve not even had my baby yet (due in feb) and went to look round a nursery a few weeks ago, we could do with looking at a few more but also really liked that one and may put our names down in Jan. I don’t want the stress of doing it when she’s born x

I just booked mine for April 2026 when mine will be 9mo old (South East London), the nursery advised we were the first people on the list for then but it means we’ve been able to get a fully funded place as we only wanted 2 days a week which most places won’t do (as they want you to do at least 3 so that you’re paying something). I felt very keen and a bit silly but honestly at least it’s one thing sorted! I just emailed ones I was interested in and asked if it was too early to be looking for then and everyone said no!

Forgot to say, I’m looking for a place in January 2026

I have been advised to start ASAP to guarantee a space and won't actually need it until March/April 2026 🤦🏻‍♀️ So we have just started searching and plan on emailing the ones we like the look of over the weekend xx

I booked a childminder for my son to start going to at 10 months when I was 8 months pregnant. I live in a very competitive area for nurseries/childcare generally though so you may not need to look as early depending where you live and availability but it's always worth emailing places as soon as possible to get an idea of waiting lists etc x

Depends where you live. We confirmed our little girls space in October to start April 25 when she's 11 months. There wasn't any waiting lists in our area. The nurseries we viewed said they were only just getting people enquiring for that term.

I’m 18 weeks pregnant and we’ve already applied for the nursery we want. They’re booked up until march 2026 at the moment and we want may 2026 and term time only (which is really hard to get places for) so I wanted to make sure we didn’t miss out

I booked his nursery place before he was born for when he would be 1 🫠

Sounds like we might need to get a wiggle on 😬. Thank you everyone for your help, really appreciate it and we'll definitely start the hunt over the next week or so

Call up and ask for waiting list times (I live very rurally and I just took the last place for May 2026!!)

We had to apply when I was pregnant as there were 12-18 month waiting lists. I'd start looking now as there may be limited places already.

Yesterday 🫣😂

I booked a place and paid the deposit etc and I'm only 5 months pregnant lol. I know the nursery my older daughter goes to wouldn't have space if I waited till baby was born

As soon as possible! There is high demand at the moment! We put our name down with our childminder when I was 12 weeks pregnant x

Ring round and ask your local nurseries. I waited til 30 weeks pregnant to looo round and only one nursery had two days available to start when lo is 9 months. They say to look round here when your 8 weeks pregnant which feels wrong and would have been impossible as I don’t know I was pregnant then!
