Those who have potty trained when did you know you are ready to take them out without a nappy?

We are on day 1 potty training as husband is off work for the Christmas break, we are just wondering what to do when we go out and for sleeping/naps? Is it best to keep him in pull ups until he is more established at using the potty? When did you know when your child was ready to go out with no nappy? Thanks!

We stayed in the house day 1-3. Nappies on for nap and bedtime. When we went out I took a potty everywhere we went plus a bunch of changes of clothes. From my reading once we ditched nappies we never went back at all except for sleeping

Wow ok! Can I ask where you use the potty if bringing it with you? For example I’m a SAHM so I take him out every day for a walk around the shops (live in central London) toddler groups and playground. Just wondering how I would use potty in this scenario as obviously can’t just get it out in the street/park! Unless I rely on him telling me and I can find a public bathroom, do you that would be doable from your experience?

Tbh I do just get it out in the park or the street. Mostly somewhere discreet if possible. Everyone is very understanding. I consider anywhere a dog might wee to be fair game. So I wouldn’t get it out inside. But we often drive so he has a wee sitting in the boot before getting in the car to minimise accident risks

We’ve been training/ she has been actively using the potty for about 2-3 weeks now. After seeing her do really well at home, we sent her to school in panties otherwise it would be the whole day in nappies. Otherwise nappies when out and about, sleeping, car seat (over whole outfit). About a week ago we forgot to put a nappy on and she did great so we have been putting nappy on for car seat, just in case, and for sleeping but explained it’s only for those times. I would wait until they’ve had practise in pants and are good at asking. We have a carry potty and so far been to mostly restaurants etc only. We ask her to wee before we go and then hope for the best if we are elsewhere 😅 and put a nappy on if we know we are going somewhere not accessible but she won’t use the nappy tbh

@Penny that’s a fair point 😂 thanks will see how we go

@Jess thank you! Yes might see how we’re doing after a week and then reassess if we brave jt without in public. Useful to know how others have done though 👌🏼

We use the my carry potty and she goes where she needs to go, unfortunately with them being so young they might not be able to hold it until you get to a toilet, our daughter has sat on her potty in the middle of the supermarket or just shops x

Our little girl wears nappies for naps/sleep but knickers through the day. I’m waiting until she starts having dry nappies through the night consistently to start transitioning over. X

@Eleanor that’s what I thought re holding until a toilet, it’s all so new to me, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone using a potty in the park or shops before so didn’t even consider this was a thing!

@Amy good thinking, will do the same!
