Night waking for a snack?

The last 4 nights my daughter has been waking around 12:30-1am saying she’s hungry? Even though she’s eating normally and plenty during the day, I offered her a bedtime snack the last few nights but she declined as she’s still full from dinner. Is this a growing phase? Usually she sleeps 12/13/14 hours straight through but now she’s waking for an hour overnight and I’m exhausted as once I’m awake it takes ages to go back to sleep🙃

If I was in this situation , I would firmly refuse as she is full from her dinner. Eventually it will sink in ..

Defo agree ⬆️ I would not be entertaining this. Firmly say it’s nighttime and time to go back to sleep x

I'd offer a cup of milk

I’d do the same as Mel and offer some milk! She could be going through a growth spurt :) sometimes I wake in the middle of the night hungry or thirsty 🤷‍♀️ x

Yeah my eldest had milk through the night till he was about 5:

@Swapna I’d absolutely never deny her food if she’s hungry day or night, she eats her snack and does go back to sleep for the rest of the night but it’s just a bit odd she’s suddenly started doing this even though she eats normally during the day

@Mel s I would but she’s dairy free and doesn’t like any alternative milks as a drink😞

@Amy If I woke up hungry, I’d listen to my body and not ignore it, I’ll never deny her food if hunger is waking her but I don’t know if this happens during a development leap or a growth spurt?

@Rosie if your gut says that she needs it , go for it. I wouldn't offer milk as I have this inherent fear of rotting teeth - again nothing against others who have suggested milk , just my personal opinion - and honestly what you think is right for your girl, must be done 😍 My rationale behind not offering is very simple (again my logic ) - if the child is full at dinnertime, more often it is a case of a habit of waking up in the middle of the night asking for a snack - if say you were to offer her water - would she be tempted to still wake up.... food for thought? But as I always say , mother knows best.

@Swapna she already has a water bottle in her bed so for months she’s been having a drink and going back to sleep…I’ve watched her try to go back to sleep tossing and turning then she eventually calls me to say she’s hungry so she obviously tries to ignore it but can’t. She’ll tell me her tummy is rumbling so I have to get her something, usually an oat bar and she’s happy with that. I just don’t want it to set her body into the rhythm of eating in the middle of the night, I hope it’s just a phase while she’s growing!

@Rosie that is a catch 22. How long has this been going on???

@Swapna 3/4 nights…today she’s eaten breakfast, a few snacks, lunch and barely touched her dinner. I’m finding she cannot stomach 3 meals a day, if she’s had breakfast and lunch she’s not hungry enough for dinner and I can’t move it later as she goes to bed at 6:30/7pm. Offered her a snack before bed tonight and she kindly declined saying she’s full so I’ll see what happens tonight. I might try a lighter lunch tomorrow, more of a snack plate rather than a meal to see if she has more appetite for dinner x

@Rosie I absolutely love your idea - lowering the quantities so that she has the appetite for dinner. We do the same because ours doesn't eat big meals. And I read this somewhere and it has stuck in my mind ever since - the size of ones stomach is the size of their fist. If our daughter has 2 big meals , we stick with fruits and a small portion of dinner - her tummuy usually thanks us for this. Better digestion is generally fantastic for anyone's sleep. Again, if my girl was hungry for breakfast, she would demand for it.... give it a go as you have said... it will be a trial and error.
