Would you take Ambien (5 mg) if prescribed during your third trimester if you had severe insomnia?

I wouldn’t 😣 I take Magnesium Glycinate before bed and it REALLY helps.

Have you tried unisom? Does it work for you?

@Autumn I take magnesium every morning and night and doesn’t seem to help. It helped in my first and second trimester.

I’d probably try something different. Ativan?

But honestly you and your prescribing Dr know you best and if you have severe insomnia then maybe that is best.

@Jennie I normally don’t take medication pregnant or not. I honestly would feel bad/guilty to take Ambien just knowing it crosses the placenta. I’ve thought about maybe taking it the night before knowing I’ll have a busy day. But then again I just don’t know if I even want to do that.

@Bryona the reason any doctor would prescribe a medication while pregnant is if the benefits outweigh the risks. So by your doctor prescribing this for you is pretty much saying your insomnia is more of a risk to the pregnancy than the ambien.

@Alexandra that makes a lot of sense. Running off of 2 sometimes 3 hours of sleep per night for the last two months isn’t ideal. I don’t know how my body does it.

I took Unisom sleep tabs 25mg and that helped a lot! I would take it about 30 minutes before bed and it helped me fall and stay asleep all night!

@Bianca I will give those a try! Thank you so much! 😊

I struggled with unisom because I’m prone to sleep paralysis. But I’ve heard it works for most people.

I take unisom as well, I suffer from insomnia. I'd say if yours is bad I'd take it a couple hours before bed. I take it and still wake up quite a bit throughout the night for bathroom breaks, and if I get too uncomfortable or my daughter gets to kicking/ moving around too much in bed. But at least I'm falling asleep around 12-1am instead of 6-6:30 a.m.

Only you know what’s right for you. If the doctor prescribed it then it’s safe. I get being wary of using a drug, but remember that your baby needs a mom who can function after they arrive! The more sleep deprived you are the more likely postpartum will be harder. Remember that you matter too!
